Towards inclusive museum institutions: the National Museum of Cameroon
Vers des institutions muséales inclusives : le Musée National du Cameroun
Résumé
Over the last twenty years or so, the museum world has entered a period of inclusive thinking, giving rise to numerous mediation initiatives aimed at audiences that don't usually frequent museums. Drawing on various institutional documents and observations of systems and activities, this article takes a socio-historical approach to analyzing the reality of the inclusive dynamic in Cameroon's national museum. More precisely, our aim is to gain a better understanding of an evolution that may ultimately lead to a profound transformation of this museum. To move forward, we need to answer three simple questions: first, what is inclusion? What is museum inclusion? It's important to agree on the words, and on the principle that the inclusive point of view imposes. So, is the national museum really inclusive? We can legitimately wonder whether it takes into account a notion that has already been enshrined in Cameroonian law. Finally, what are the areas we need to work on today? What changes need to be promoted to move forward in building a more inclusive museum system, one that ensures access to everything for everyone?
